    Dr. Harold “Harry” Orville

    June, 11 2011

Larry & Doug - some of my fondest memories as a kid were when your dad was our Scout Leader for Troop 1. He helped me appreciate nature and the outdoors and I've thought of him often over the years. The picture of us from Charlie Base always brings a smile to my face!

In 1974, Dr. Orville just became the Department Head when I enrolled in the Department as a MS degree graduate student. Harry and Laura were always generous and kind to students; they especially having great impact on the newly arrived foreign students. In the research and in the class, Harry was a serious scholar and a true gentleman. After my graduation, he remained to be a mentor and a friend until the day he passed away. I will feel his absence and miss him dearly next time when I visit Rapid City again. Mike Yeh

Our condolences to Laura and the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Harry was an icon on campus: a great teacher, a great researcher, a team player in every sense of the word, a man of unimpeachable integrity, and a great friend to all on campus. SDSM&T was fortunate indeed to have Harry on campus for so many years. He will be greatly missed.

I am so sad to hear of Dr. Orville's passing. I was so fortunate to have Dr. Orville as advisor as he was my most favorite professor. I'll never forget the time I spent in his classroom and dissertation discussion. Sincere condolences to his family.
